How Net Metering and Grid-Tied Solar Work
A grid-tied solar PV system allows your property to use solar power during the day while remaining connected to the utility grid. Where approved, excess production can be handled through the applicable metering arrangement.

Net Metering / Grid Tie Power Flow

Solar Panels
Solar panels generate electricity from sunlight

Inverter
The inverter converts solar power into usable AC electricity

Consumption
Your home or business uses the solar power first

Metering
Any approved excess can flow through the grid connection and meter arrangement.

Metering
When solar production is low, you still draw from the grid.

Typical Application Process
Application & Grid Approval
Solar PV systems that interconnect with the LUCELEC grid require formal application and approval through the relevant regulatory process.
System Information
Typical application information includes customer category, proposed system capacity, estimated annual generation, inverter details, PV module details, and whether storage is included.
Technical Documentation
Technical design drawings, including a single-line electrical schematic certified by a licensed electrician or registered electrical engineer, may be required.
Equipment Specifications
Major component specifications and test certificates should be prepared before submission.
End-to-End Support
Busy Bee Inc. can guide customers through the practical documentation and installation steps.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need batteries for net metering?
Not usually. A standard grid-tied system is designed to work with the utility grid. Batteries are optional where backup power or resilience is required.
Will I still have a LUCELEC bill?
Most grid-tied customers remain connected to the grid and may still receive a monthly bill. The objective is to reduce grid-purchased electricity, not necessarily eliminate every charge.
Can every home install solar?
Not every property is ideal. Roof space, shading, electrical configuration, ownership, and approval requirements all matter.
How do I know what size system I need?
The starting point is your electricity bill. Busy Bee reviews your usage and site conditions before recommending a system size.
